About "Phlebotomy Basics"
DEFINITION OF PHLEBOTOMY
The historical definition of phlebotomy is the practice of opening a vein by incision or puncture to remove blood for therapeutic purposes (also known as bloodletting). A more modern definition is the act of collecting blood from the veins, generally for the purpose of laboratory testing and/or analysis.
DESCRIPTION OF THE CLASS
The Phlebotomy Basics class is a 6 hour introduction to phlebotomy which does NOT include clinical phlebotomy hours. This class is appropriate for nurse aides who want to work in hospitals, those who want to learn the basics of phlebotomy, and those who want to put a line on their resume saying they have completed a phlebotomy course.
STATE REGISTRATION
Unlike CNA certification (which is highly regulated by the State), there are no State guidelines for phlebotomy education, nor is there such a thing as a "State Certified Phlebotomist".
CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION
When you have completed the Phlebotomy Basics class, you will receive a "Certificate of Completion" indicating that you have received education in the "Basics" of phlebotomy.

STEPPING STONE
For those students who wish to pursue a career as a phlebotomist, additional courses (which include clinical hours) may be required by the employer.
